A person is able to arrive in Santander throughout the entire year by the Ferry that departs from Plymouth, England, which has two arrivals and departures a week. From the French border (Hendaya) there is a wide bus service via the motorway (aprox. 220 Km). The Santander airport, which is only ten minutes away from the city centre, services flights from Barcelona, Bilbao, and Madrid. From these cities one can also make connections to Santander by means of train or bus, which have both day and night time departures. SPANISH COURSES FOR FOREIGNERS IN SANTANDER (CANTABRIA)

Cantabria forms, without any doubt, a harmonious joining of the sea and mountains. Situated in the center of the Cantábrica coast, between the mountain range of the same name and the Cantábrico sea, it extends 5,289 km2 and has more than half a million inhabitants.

Santander, the capital of Cantabria, is situated in the southeast part of the peninsula, Cabo Mayor, while at the same time overlooking the entrance of the Santander bay that begins at the rocky peninsula, Magdalena. It has long avenues that border the sea and many spacious parks.

It is also necessary to mention its spetacular beaches: the 5 km of coast (that extends connected with the inner city) has been recognized by the European Union for its excellent quality.

The region also has an impressive religious and civil heritage which has resulted in various works of great beauty and diverse styles as seen in the case of El Capricho by Gaudí, in Comillas. From the presence of its primitive inhabitants, exist numerous remains of polychrome paintings which can be found in Altamira just outside of Santillana Del Mar. They have also discovered many other sites in the surrounding area that contain paintings from different prehistoric ages.

The culture also plays an important role in the society and can be seen through diverse museums, libraries and university institutions like, the University of Cantabria and the International University of Menéndez Pelayo whose primary location is in the Magdalena Palace located on the Magdalena peninsula. This palace belongs to the Santander city council and has been classified as an artistic and historic combination. It is equipped with the latest in technology and has the best didactic resources.
